Ash glazes are ceramic glazes made from wood or straw ash. In the history of Japanese pottery, they have played an important role. Traditional Japanese potteries still use ash glazing.

It originated in China during the Song Dynasty around 1500 BC, when burnt wood ash from the kiln fell on pots, initially by accident.

What is Minoware?

Mino ware (Mino yaki) is a type of pottery in which many colours and designs have been created to suit the times and people’s different tastes. As a result, Mino ware uses a variety of techniques and has diverse looks and textures.

Mino ware is made from the soil of Gifu Prefecture, known as Japan’s largest producer of pottery, and the pieces easily blend into daily life.

The diverse designs and styles of Mino ware, which have changed in shape to suit the trends of the times and people’s lifestyles, are the most attractive and unique of all pottery.
