What is Tenmoku style?
Tenmoku style is a type of Japanese pottery influenced by Chinese ceramics, specifically from the Song Dynasty. It is known for its dark, iron-rich glaze that ranges from matte black to glossy finishes.
The term “Tenmoku” refers to the mountain temple in China where Japanese Buddhist monks obtained these tea bowls. The dark glaze of Tenmoku ceramics is often used in tea bowls to enhance the colour of matcha tea. The glaze exhibits unique effects like “hare’s fur” or “oil-spot” patterns, which arise naturally during the firing process.
Each Tenmoku piece is one-of-a-kind due to these inherent variations. Tenmoku ceramics embody the Japanese aesthetic principle of “wabi-sabi,” valuing simplicity and imperfections.
