Premium Tosa Binchotan Japanese White Charcoal – Quarter Cut (12KG) for Konro Grill
Tosa Binchotan from Kochi is prized for its dense composition and clean burn, making it a superior choice for grilling. The high quality of Tosa Binchotan allows it to burn hotter and longer than other charcoals, providing a consistent heat source that is essential for professional cooking.
Traditionalists always insist that only binchotan produced in the following regions of Japan can truly be called binchotan:
- Kishu (Wakayama)
- Tosa (Kochi)
- Hyuga (Miyazaki)
The difference in results can be significant. Always ask where your binchotan was produced if it is not stated.

What is Tosa Binchotan?
Tosa binchotan is a premium Japanese charcoal crafted from ubame oak (Quercus phillyraeoides) grown in the Tosa region of Kochi Prefecture. Renowned for its hardness and density, it produces a distinctive metallic sound when struck, and its even, long-lasting burn makes it an excellent choice for grilling.
Among the three main sources of premium binchotan white charcoal in Japan—Kishu binchotan (Wakayama), Tosa binchotan (Kochi), and Hyuga binchotan (Miyazaki)—Tosa binchotan is celebrated as one of the top varieties.
Its distinctive qualities are directly linked to the unique properties of ubame oak in these regions and cannot be replicated by alternative materials, even within Japan.
